Professor Musbau Adewumi Akanji is an accomplished Nigerian biochemist, distinguished academic leader, and Fellow of multiple professional bodies. With a career spanning over four decades in research, university teaching, and institutional leadership, he has contributed immensely to the advancement of biochemical sciences and higher education in Nigeria.

He rose through the academic ranks from Research Officer to Professor and later served as Vice-Chancellor in two Nigerian universities. His scholarship integrates toxicology, parasite biochemistry, phytomedicine, and higher education development, reflecting a lifelong commitment to scientific excellence and national development.

Professor Akanji currently continues his academic engagement as Professor (Contract) at Kwara State University.

Born on January 4, 1951, in Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria. Professor Akanji’s life journey reflects a blend of academic excellence, cultural rootedness, and community engagement. He hails from Offa, a historic town known for its deep educational and cultural heritage.

He is married and blessed with three children:

Professor Akanji’s academic journey began at Offa Grammar School before proceeding to Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo. He later attended:

University of Ibadan — B.Sc. (Hons) Biochemistry, Second Class Upper Division (1975)

University of Ife — M.Sc. (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) in Biochemistry 

His postgraduate work laid the foundation for a research career focused on toxicology, cellular biochemistry, and biochemical mechanisms of drug interaction.

Academic Career

Professor Akanji began his professional career at the Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research, where he rose from Research Officer to Senior Research Officer between 1977 and 1986.

In 1986, he joined University of Ilorin as Lecturer I in the Department of Biochemistry. Through dedication and academic excellence, he rose through the ranks: Senior Lecturer and later Professor (1993 – 2021) 

He later continued academic service as Professor (Contract) at Kwara State University.

His career also includes visiting professorships at multiple institutions, demonstrating his national academic relevance.

Vice-Chancellorship and Institutional Leadership

Professor Akanji’s leadership trajectory culminated in his appointment as:

Vice-Chancellor, Al-Hikmah University (2005 – 2008).

Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology Minna (2012 – 2017). 

In these roles, he strengthened institutional governance, academic planning, research development, and administrative reforms. He also served as Director of Academic Planning at the University of Ilorin, contributing significantly to policy development and institutional advancement. 

National and International Engagement

Professor Akanji has actively participated in leadership and management development programs across Africa, Europe, and the United States, including workshops organized by UNESCO and the Association of African Universities.

Within the Nigerian Academy of Science, he has served in several strategic capacities, including Representative of Biological Sciences, Public Affairs Secretary, Chairman of Sectional Committee, and Academic Secretary.
